A test plan is a systematic approach to testing a system such as a machine or software. The plan typically contains a detailed understanding of what the eventual workflow will be.
According to IEEE 829 Standards the test plan should contain all the following things listed:
- Test plan identifier;
- Introduction;
- Test items;
- Features to be tested;
- Features not to be tested;
- Approach;
- Item pass/fail criteria;
- Suspension criteria and resumption requirements;
- Test deliverables;
- Testing tasks;
- Environmental needs;
- Responsibilities;
- Staffing and training needs;
- Schedule;
- Risks and contingencies;
- Approvals.
These are the fundamental things that should be covered in Test Plan.
